2017 IECA Conference

Portions of this blog excerpted and edited from IECA website, www.ieca.com

Jim Cantore, world renowned meteorologist with the Weather Channel was the keynote speaker at the International Erosion Control Conference in Atlanta, Georgia this past February.

Cantore discussed changes in weather patterns, predictions for the future and how these changes will affect the methodology used to control erosion and sedimentation of the built environment and construction operations. Cantore urged attendees to consider what can we do today to prepare for the weather changes over the next 50 years?

At the conference, there was a general consensus that climate change is affecting our environment in significant ways, which can be clearly measured, and is already being addressed in the fields of construction; master planning, public safety. The questions posed at workshops and seminars in the conference focused on best management practices and considerations for changes in legislation to allow for better climate change adaptation.

Some panel sessions at the workshop discussed how reports of potential changes at the US EPA under the new US administration may impact US Federal laws such as the Clean Water Act. The Clean Water Act forms the basis from which many of the regulations regarding protection of natural land and water resources from damaging erosion and sedimentation are enforced. Many of these laws are intended not only for support of environmental protection, but ultimately for security of human health and safety.

ISLE supports island youth education at Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies

High school students on Oahu learned about how local conflicts can evolve into global conflicts through the Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies. “Learning about the issues our neighbors must deal with locally help us understand their perspectives, and they in turn can better understand ours”, said Ron Gonzales of ISLE, LLC.

Ron noted that many of the basic issues discussed on the field trip were ones that have been brought up across the world, and throughout history. ” Many of the basic issues that lead to conflict are often not new – they’re just framed in new settings. So there are probably already solutions, which both sides simply need to be willing to explore and adopt.”

The Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies offers training to regional leaders from several countries on how to manage and resolve conflict, and this year has included a student outreach component for the future leaders of our region.

Who we are

I thought I’d use this first blog post to tell you a little bit more about who we are — about our core beliefs.

Founding Principles

I founded this company in part on the principles adopted from my tenure as President of the Rotary Club of Palau. Rotary International emphasizes the concept of “Service Above Self”, in all the things we do. This resonates with me as a civil engineer’s duties are to provide designs for facilities serving the public.

Another guiding principle from Rotary I’ve embraced is the simple exercise called the “4-Way Test”. It goes something like this:

In all things we think, say or do, we should strive to pass the 4-Way Test –

  1. Is it the Truth?
  2. Is it Fair to All Concerned?
  3. Does it Build Goodwill and Better Friendships?
  4. Is it Beneficial to All Concerned?

In conjunction with these founding principles, Island Life Engineering (ISLE) follows the example of island communities throughout the Pacific. This examples is that all members of an island community contribute to the well-being of that community as a whole – we all rely on each other to do their part. This is the concept of “it takes a village….to raise a child”. ISLE operates as a community citizen, a corporate citizen, contributing in many ways to the betterment of the communities we serve.
